Pacific Coast Highway (SR-1) Bridge Repair Continues
LONG BEACH – The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) construction crews are repairing the Pacific Coast Highway (SR-1) bridge over the Terminal Island Freeway (SR-103). A semi-truck collided with several steel support girders.
Caltrans will reduce northbound Pacific Coast Highway (SR-1) to one lane from Sunday, September 25 at 7 p.m. until late October 2011. The speed limit in the construction zone will be reduced to 30 MPH.
Between 10 p.m. and 4 a.m. intermittent closures may occur on northbound SR-1 to restripe, and remove and install steel girders under the bridge. A signed detour will be in place.
Caltrans reminds motorists to “Slow For The Cone Zone.”

REGIONAL TRANSPORTATION PLAN WORKSHOPS
The Southern California Association of Governments (SCAG) develops a Regional Transportation Plan (RTP) every four years. The RTP provides a vision for transportation investments throughout the region. Using growth forecasts and economic trends that project out over a 20-year period, the RTP considers the role of transportation in the broader context of economic, environmental and quality-of-life goals for the future, identifying regional transportation strategies to address our mobility needs.
With the passage of Senate Bill 375 (SB 375), which was enacted to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, SCAG is tasked with developing a Sustainable Communities Strategy (SCS) to meet emissions reduction targets. We invite all Southern Californians to participate in this process of creating the future vision for our region. The public outreach workshops near San Pedro will be 1:00 – 4:00, Tuesday, August 23 in the Carson Civic Center, 3 Civic Plaza Drive, Carson.

HARRY BRIDGES BLVD. DETOUR ALERT -
Starting April 5, 2011, a new traffic plan will be implemented on Harry Bridges Boulevard (Harry Bridges) from Figueroa Street to Alameda Street. Vehicular traffic will be reduced to one lane heading east bound only. West bound traffic on Harry Bridges is prohibited between Broad Avenue and Figueroa Street. Trucks and other vehicles bound for areas south of Harry Bridges will use Broad Avenue. Trucks destined for other areas of the Port of Los Angeles (Port) will be directed to use the Vincent Thomas Bridge and/or the 110-Freeway. Please refer to the map on the backside of this flyer for alternate routes to areas surrounding the project site.
Reconfiguration of traffic controls will take approximately three days to complete. Once installed, this traffic plan will remain in effect for approximately nine months. There will be plenty of signs notifying motorists of access to areas north and south of Harry Bridges. Weight restrictions in surrounding streets will remain in effect and will be enforced by the Port of Los Angeles Police.
The Port appreciates your patience as we continue with the improvements to Harry Bridges. The new traffic plan will enable the Port to complete the construction by January 2012 to receive funding reimbursement from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) of 2009.
Should you wish to receive further information about the construction activities, please contact Tom Berg at (310) 739-9367, Lanie Walsh at (310) 732-3225, or the Port of Los Angeles, Construction Division at (310) 732-3522.

Message from Mayor Villaraigosa:
As you know, support has been building for our 30-10 initiative to accelerate construction of the 12 mass transit projects funded by the voter-approved Measure R. Our goal is as ambitious as it is critical to LA’s transportation, environmental, and job creation needs: get all 12 projects built in 10 years, instead of 30. And we have good news! Washington DC has been listening, and shares our goal of creating a more livable Los Angeles.Read the Washington Post piece that says our 30-10 plan should be a model for a national recovery.
Senator Barbara Boxer has asked me to testify before the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works tomorrow in Washington DC. The hearing, titled “Federal, State and Local Partnerships to Accelerate Transportation Benefits,” is going to explore implementing innovative programs like 30-10. The Committee will focus on maximizing federal investment in transportation infrastructure by partnering with cities and counties where voters have raised local taxes to build more mass transit like LA County.
In my meetings with federal officials, I have been asking--and will continue to ask--for two things:
1. Help us maximizethe investment that LA County voters made when passing Measure R by accelerating our mass transit projects.
2. Help us rebuild our local economy with support for creating good jobs.
Late tonight, I'll take a red eye from LAX, arive in DC at 6:30AM Thursday morning and head to Capitol Hill and Senator Boxer's Committee.
About 6 hours later I'll head back to the airport for my flight home. I'll keep you posted on our progress throughout my trip via my twitter page.
Best,
Antonio Villaraigosa
